A look inside Weston Sound's location recording:

The Carillon at Longwood Gardens

CD Release: "The Bells of Christmas"

Last summer, Weston Sound went on location in Longwood Gardens to record their Carillon.

This was the first recording ever of this beautiful Carillon, played by carilloneur Lisa Lonie on the nights of May 6th, May 20th, and June 6th, 2003.

Weston Sound set up pairs of microphones in a triangle around the Carillon for a total of 6 mics and 6 tracks.

We then transformed our location van into a fully functional recording studio (bottom right), setting up a mixer, and recording directly to CDr and hard disk, with a digital multitrack backup. The 6 tracks were then mixed back at Weston's studio.

The result?

We received feedback from two different people at Royal Eijsbouts, the company that manufactured the bells themselves:

"Just perfect. This is really how a carillon CD should be! The quality of the recording as well as the performance is absolutely fabulous."

"It is definitely one of the best recordings I've ever heard. Distance to the bells is perfect."
